In this tutorial I will explain how you can make eyes on a photo more intensive, by adding fire to them. This is an effect that is very popular in advertising and media.
To complete this tutorial, you will need a photo with at least one eye. You should pick a high-res close-up of an eye for best results…
Step 1: Define selection
Let’s begin! First, select the eye using any of the selection tools.
Apply a small Feather modifier to the selection by locating Feather in the Select > Modify menu. 3-5 pixels should be enough.
Step 2: Gradient
Reset FG/BG-colors by hitting D on your keyboard.
Pick the Gradient Tool and use these settings:
New layer
Create a new layer on top of the eye-layer and drag a gradient from the pupil and out. I will refer to this layer as the “fire”-layer in the rest of this tutorial.
Step 3: Difference clouds
Deselect (Ctrl + D), apply a Difference Clouds filter and then invert the layer (Ctrl + I).
Step 4: Colorize and Blend
With the “fire”-layer selected, change the Hue/Saturation.
Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation
Hue: 35
Saturation: 60
Lightness: -5
Colorize
It might not look much like fire right now, but it will…
And if we change the blending mode to Color Dodge…
Step 5: Image Adjustments
The reason why the fire appears very unreal at this stage is because the underlying photo of the eye blends too much with the colorized clouds we created.
We will fix this with a few Adjustment Layers below the “fire”-layer (above the “eye”-layer).
Photoshop CS 3 and newer:
Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Negru & White
Just click Auto and then OK.
Older versions than CS 3 (PS 9 and below):
Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation
Set the Saturation to -100 and click OK.
Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves
Final touches
Add a Mask to the “fire”-layer and mask out the edges and some other parts to make the fire more realistic.
Add a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer and desaturate parts of the fire to make it look like smoke.
