Long ago, the Orcish Horde fell to the Alliance of Lorderon after a series of climactic battles. With most of the Horde locked away in internment camps, peace has at last prevailed. In the hut of the Orcish leader Thrall, a mysterious prophet tells Thrall that the only hope for his people lies on the island of Kalimdor. Both the Prophet and Thrall know why: the Demons are returning.

The Alliance, pagan night elves, and divided Horde are waging war against each other once more. Separated by appearance, religion and culture, old hatreds bring these forces against one another. Meanwhile, the undead are spreading throughout the world, yet nobody knows why. In an untimely turn of events, a vast, demonic army of Hell-spawned demon warriors, the Burning Legion, have returned to destroy the land of Azeroth after having been banished for 10,000 years. Only by looking past their ancient hatreds for each other and standing together against true evil can the citizens of the world defeat the Burning Legion.

The Alliance was finally victorious over the Orcish Horde, driving them back to their magical world rift, and ultimately sealing it, sending the remainder of the Orcs to internment camps. But the cost was heavy, and the Alliance began to splinter under the weight of it's own prejudice. Many years after the victory, the Prince of Lordaeron, a paladin under the service of Uther Lightbringer, and Thrall, the new war chief of the Horde receive a visit from a mysterious prophet, foretelling great danger to any who do not flee across the Great Sea to the west. Although Thrall heeds the advice, the Prince does not. An undead army is rising. Lordaeron is falling. And tales of a powerful evil, the Burning Legion, are spreading. What future lies in store for the world of Azeroth? Will this once peaceful land ever know peace again?

llidan Stormrage, demon-hunter-turned-Demon, terrorizes the world with a strange underwater race of warriors. An exiled elven people abandon their corrupted Human allies, to seek a cure for their crippling addiction to magic. In the midst of this conflict, an Undead Warrior seeks the icy lair of his master, the Lich King. With the Burning Legion defeated, the Lich King can use Arthas for what the King always desired: Freedom.

After the defeat of the demon armies and the fall of Archimonde at the Battle of Mount Hyjal, evils have risen from the aftermath. Illidain Stormrage has called forth a mysterious race of sea warriors and begins to travel the world leaving destruction in his wake, while his former enslaver, the elven warden Maiev Shadowsong, hunts him down. Meanwhile, another demon lord from the depths of Hell, Kel'jaden, arises and commissions the three remaining dreadlords (as well as Illidain) to destroy the Lich King, whom has elected to free himself from the control of the demons. Grand Marshall Garishos has formed a post-apocalyptic alliance in order to rebuild what is left of the former great cities, but the Alliance grows corrupt over time. The survivors of the high elves of Quel'Thalas, now known as the Blood Elves, betray the corrupt Alliance and join Illidain. Meanwhile, Arthas continues to destroy remnants of the previous alliance and any signs of life. Arthas's personal forces are summoned by the ailing Lich King to travel to the Frozen Throne, the Lich King's prison, and stop Kel'jaden and the demon forces from destroying him.
